happy mothers day to stephanie!

A Happy first mothers day to Stephanie (and all moms too). Feels odd to say ‘first’—because it feels like the boys have been with us for so much longer.

She had a good day, and ended it with a mom and sons photo shoot in the park.

booty shakin’

For some reason, the boys really love to get down and dance, but only to specific songs. They do it pretty much on their own. Last night Beastie Boys came on the radio, and within seconds we had two booty shakin boys. They love almost every Beastie Boys song. Probably because its the only CD I have the car for emergency radio replacement.

duathalon year duex.

So we have been training for our off road duathalon since january or so, and the race was this weekend. Check out last years duathalon coverage here.

We had a great weekend in prescott again this year. We had grandma and grandpa watch the boys while Stephanie and I went up for the evening. A friday night dinner and a minor league hockey game.

It was a brisk morning up in the mountains, but the sun was warming things up well. a 45° start temp.

Us ready to run & bike

Stephanie ran the first 1.5 mile run in her normal pace of 16 minutes. About a minute or two faster than last year.

Then I was off for the biking.
IMG_6840
Coming in off the bike into the transition area

I improved about 4 minutes over last years ride time. It was less windy, but last year I had a bike with gears, this year I rode the single speed, and pushed it up the hills harder than I should have. I was able to ride up (where about half the 130 participants walked). I paid for it later when my lungs literally felt strained. I forgot that i normally ride at 1k feet elevation, and can do that kind of stuff, where a 5500 foot altitude plus a long & steep 1 mile climb takes my breath away. Literally.

Stephanie was off for the last leg of the run. She did improve over last year and came in strong. Some issues with altitude and pollen, but nothing her inhaler and a short walking couldn’t help.

Stephanie Coming in from the run

We finished at 1:32. we hope next year to improve much more.

It was a great night away and time with out our boys, but we were happy to get home and see them. They had a good time with grandma and grandpa, but they did like having us home.

Noah & Ezra visit the zoo

Today we went to the Phoenix Zoo. They boys really enjoyed the long wagon ride and frequent stops. Although I think they were more interested in watching other kids than animals.

Some pics.

To truly know the life of a goat, one must be like the goat.

new years aspirations

Yep. Aspirations. Stephanie and I are not big on new year resolutions. We do set goals often, and revisit these through out the year. Regardless, a new year brings a fresh blanket of snow, and we are free to make whatever footprints we wish. So i thought i would share some things we have been talking about recently.

As a family:

  • Continue to declutter and own less stuff.
  • Save more (aka retirement planning).
  • spend less time watching tv, and more time reading books together (I have green eggs and ham memorized!)

Matt:

  • run more. I was running 7 miles in 60 minutes. I’d like to be at 9 miles in 60 minutes.
  • bike more. umm yeah, that is always my goal.
  • Read more. I need to finish my pMBA.
  • date my wife more than ever.
  • Continue to get in better shape. Jan. 2009 i was 228 at 6′ 2″. Jan 2010 I am 190. I’d like to see 180 this year.
  • Go camping with my boys.
  • redesign this blog.

Well those are mine, Stephanie will share hers later i am sure.

boys

I know I say this often, but i am really proud to be a dad of two little boys. I daily look forward to seeing them play,  as the little toddlers they are, but also look forward to the shenanigans of 8 year olds.

What Is a Boy?
By Alan Beck

Between the innocence of babyhood and the dignity of manhood, we find a delightful creature called a boy. Boys come in assorted sizes, weights and colors, but all boys have the same creed: to enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day and to protest with noise (their only weapon) when their last minute is finished and the adult males pack them off to bed at night.

Boys are found everywhere—on top of, underneath, inside of, climbing on, swinging from, running around or jumping to. Mothers love them, little girls hate them, older sisters and brothers tolerate them, adults ignore them and Heaven protects them. A boy is Truth with dirt on its face, Beauty with a cut on its finger, Wisdom with bubble gum in its hair and the Hope of the future with a frog in its pocket.

When you are busy a boy is an inconsiderate, bothersome, intruding jangle of noise. When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly or else he becomes a savage, sadistic, jungle creature bent on destroying the world and himself with it.

A boy is a composite—he has the appetite of a horse, the digestion of a sword swallower, the energy of a pocket-size atomic bomb, the curiosity of a cat, the lungs of a dictator, the imagination of a Paul Bunyan, the shyness of a violet, the audacity of a steel trap, the enthusiasm of a fire cracker, and when he makes something he has five thumbs on each hand.

He likes ice cream, knives, saws, Christmas, comic books, the boy across the street, woods, water (in its natural habitat), large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday mornings and fire engines.

He is not much for Sunday school, company, schools, books without pictures, music lessons, neckties, barbers, girls, overcoats, adults, or bedtime.

Nobody else is so early to rise or so late to supper. Nobody else gets so much fun out of trees, dogs and breezes. Nobody else can cram into one pocket-a rusty knife, a half eaten apple, three feet of string, an empty Bull Durham sack, two gum drops, six cents, a sling shot, a chunk of unknown substance and a genuine supersonic code ring with a secret compartment.

A boy is a magical creature—you can lock him out of your workshop, but you can’t lock him out of your heart. You can get him out of your study, but you can’t get him out of your mind.

Might as well give up—he is your captor, your jailer, your boss and your master–a freckled-faced, pint-sized, cat-chasing, bundle of noise.

But when you come home at night with only the shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams—he can mend them like new with the two magic words—”Hi Dad!

plenty to be thankful for!

we are such a blessed family. I am constantly thinking about how great things are. My world view has changed so much over the last few years and I can truly see that we are blessed.

Some things I know i am thankful for.

The new family dynamic this year.

Lets not forget things like grace & hope, freedom of religion, this great country, clean water, food on the table, and that i get to own my own design firm. So many great things in life to be thankful for!

Things i am Excited about – Matt

I thought I would share some things i am personally excited about for the next 12 months.

  • The boys getting more and more active. it is a lot of fun.
  • playing in the dirt (with the kids….right).
  • GORD – the off road Duathalon in March with Stephanie.
  • The date night alone in prescott before the GORD with stephanie 😉  – our first planned night away.
  • Running a half marathon, maybe the Lost Dutchman in March.
  • Camping next summer with the boys.
  • Maybe heading to the beach.
  • Maybe heading to colorado in the summer
  • Nana & Papa Adams coming down in march to see their little grandkids.
  • more time mountain biking.
  • Some work stuff. I know im odd, but i feel some good things happening at factor1
  • Cool tech toys. Stuff is getting cooler and cooler every year, and i know im a geek, but i look forward to it.
  • Scoot bikes?!?! bikes without pedals for toddlers. Maybe they will be ready next fall. maybe not. they are still pretty short.

Just a few random things in my head.

More coming soon, but here are a few pics to tease you.

noah rocks the peekabo

Noah seriously loves to play peekaboo. He will play it at the most odd times. Eating, bottle drinking, playing, crawling, or jumping. he is quite the ham about it too.

noah picked up some mad peekabo skills in one or two days.
