Earth Hour Part 2

Cnn.com has an article up about the cities that have already participated. Also, google.com has gone all black for today in honor of the event stating, “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn – Earth Hour.” I hope everyone will participate!

Earth Hour

Tomorrow, March 29 at 8 pm (local time) is Earth Hour an event created by the World Wildlife Fund. All you have to do is simply turn of your lights for an hour. That is one easy thing to do for the environment. I plan on sitting in my backyard star gazing and enjoying the gorgeous weather.

Are you turning of your lights tomorrow night?

gas

As you may know gas prices keep going up and I don’t think they are ever going to go back to around $1.30 a gallon. I find that a lot of people really like to complain about this fact, but that only a few are willing to make changes to their driving habits. Some people are driving less and trying to combine errands, but what about speeding and wasteful idling? These are the two biggest gas waster I see in my neck of the woods (besides the fact that the Phoenix area is so spread out). I constantly see people start their car and run back in the house to get something or do something. Honestly I understand this in the summer and you have little ones and don’t want them to get third degree burns when you put them in their car-seats, but right now the weather is absolutely gorgeous and there is just no reason for it. I also frequent the post office where about one or two SUVs happily sit in the parking lot with their engines running while the owner is inside. I really don’t get the purpose of this one, is it that hard to turn the key in the ignition? This suburban mom blogged about how her five seconds of useful idling at start-up wastes 16 gallons of gas a year. Her estimated 3.5 minutes a week of idling, which is a very small number and I see a lot of cars idling for longer than that on just occasion, wastes 16 gallons of gas a year. The price of gas is averaging about $3.15 per gallon in Arizona and that would be $50.40 a year. How much gas money are you wasting?

Now let’s tackle the speeding issue. This is a big gas waster according to a cnn.com article. The article states that for every 10 miles an hour you go over 60 adds about $.54 per gallon of gas. It is not unusual for the vehicles on the nearby highway to be traveling around 80 mph. Is it worth the extra $1.08 a gallon? Now I used to be a speed demon and I did not stop because of gas prices. I personally stopped because I found it less stressful then when I was trying to weave in and out of traffic. My husband made fun of me because he thought I drove like a grandma and then when he saw I was consistently getting about 4 mpg more then him, he decided to give it a try. We now both drive like snowbirds and don’t care! Are you willing to slow down to save a few bucks and at the same time reduce your impact on the earth?

I am personally working on my idling right now. I don’t ever idle for long, but I did find I was idling while adjusting the mirrors and seat (when you share a car and there is about a foot of height difference between the drivers you do this a lot). I was also idling in parking lots while waiting to back out and getting my seat belt on. I am not perfect I still idle and sometimes dink around more than I should with the engine running but I am trying to change my habits.

Have any gas saving, driving tips to share?

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom, I hope you have a wonderful, fun-filled day.

I hope Tom and Jerry get to celebrate with you next year, but this year you are stuck with just us. 🙂

True Compassion

This video shows that compassion can make a difference. It shows that even when you think you can do nothing, sometimes you just need to be there.

How can you make a difference in your community?

MFD-CSI????

Lately our City has been kicking around the idea of cross-training fire fighters as police officers and police officers as fire fighters. Now I know for a fact that fire fighters go through a ton of training each and every year just to be fire fighters, I have no idea how they could also possibly train to be police officers too. I assume the police departments does a lot of training on its own too.

At any rate I have the pleasure of sharing with you the Fire Department’s first ever crime scene investigation. (Warning these images may be graphic to some, or just hilarious you can decide.) Continue reading “MFD-CSI????”

goal update for matt

Since steph posted her goal update, I’ll share mine.

I still havent fixed the master bath toilet from leaking. This is affecting our goal o wasting less water. I do have the parts. Maybe this weekend.

Although We have worked out more. I have failed to loose any weight. Im still 215. i guess for being 6′ 3″ its not all bad, especially since I easily wear a 34 pant. But i wanted to be 205 by the end of the first quarter. boooo.

thats all. I dont have as many important goals as stephanie does. I guess thats why i have her.

Goal Update

In January I listed some of my goals for 2008. Here is a quick update:

Waste less: We are definitely eating most of the produce I buy. We have hardly wasted at all in that area! Occasionally something gets forgotten in the back of the fridge, but we have made a major improvement compared to last year. As for our water use it is down compared to last year and that is because it was a rainy winter here in AZ and we turned off our water system for about two months. I did do the food coloring test on our toilets and learned the master bath toilet has a slow leak from the tank to the bowel, but we have failed to fix the issue. 🙁 Hopefully we get that taken care of quickly.

Eat more vegetarian meals: We are meeting this goal and actually exceeding it most weeks. We actually usually eat 3-5 vegetarian meals a week and almost all my lunches are and Matt’s are about half and half. 🙂

Dog walks: I have not met this goal very often. They get about three a week. 🙁 I made it more of a priority this week and they got one all five days. 🙂 Hopefully the trend continues.

Fast Food: Personally we are not buying fast food at all, but on business trips and lunches we have had more than one a month. 🙁 We have established Free Lunch Fridays at the office, so I will have to think of a non-fast food solution for this. Any suggestions?

Dossier Update

Our dossier did get shipped to Washington, D.C. on Thursday! I was informed it could take 5 – 10 days, but that it usually is arrives back at our agency the very next Friday, so hopefully it will be back at our agency March 7. After that our agency will ship it to Ethiopia.

Happy Leap Day!

Did this feel like an extra day to anyone?

Not me, I had a busy, but overall fun week. I got to spend a lot of time outside this week walking dogs (if you don’t know I do this part-time), my boss was out of town so I picked up some extra work. The weather was great this week, I had to get out my tank tops, shorts, and sunblock (realized that after Monday and I was a little red). I really enjoyed all the extra time outside even if it kept me from doing other stuff that needed done.

We had a slight glitch in our adoption paperwork, but that was quickly fixed and sent to our agency. It hopefully went to Washington, D.C. yesterday. We don’t know for sure yet, but I will let you know when we find out.

In other news my dad made the paper. He said I was younger than I am, thanks dad!

I have decided to particpate in a tech free challenge. I am going to give up technology (e.g. television, computer, wii games) on Sundays for the month of March. Matt still hasn’t decided if he is going to participate yet, he is so addicted to email. I am looking forward to a day without technology right now even though I do love reading blogs and emails.

Anyone else want to participate in the challenge?

By the way this is post 200 on our blog. We have been talkative!

matts notes on georgia

So here are my general observations on our trip

  • downtown atlanta seems pretty cool
  • people drive the speed limit on the high ways. odd
  • every road seems to be a highway, at 65 mph. with stop signs and stop lights
  • the road names on the maps dont match the signs. makes directions hard to follow
  • people seem to operate and a relaxed pace. Kind of cool. Unless you are in a hurry
  • the highways are lined with trees. not houses and businesses like here in AZ
  • the toll road was fun. I’ve never had to toss the change in the bucket like that
  • My Weedwacker has more horsepower than our rental dodge caliber had
  • There seemed to be these really cool looking turbines in the ceilings of tunnels. Maybe for generating electricity off the wind caused by cars? I need to do more homework on them

Over all I liked atlanta. If it wasn’t so far away from our families, I could see us living there.
